Particulate Matter 10 In contrast, PM10 or particulate matter 10 has a larger diameter than PM2.5. Also called inhalable coarse particles, they have a diameter not exceeding 10 micrometers, but is bigger than 2.5 micrometers. And because of its larger size, some PM10 may be seen even without the aid of a microscope, especially in large amounts. However, smaller particles may escape these defenses and move deeper into our lungs, causing health problems. For this reason, Ecology monitors two specific size ranges of small particles: PM 10 — particles less than 10 micrometers; PM 2.5 — particles less than 2.5 micrometers

When we use the term “coarse particles,” we are mainly referring to particles within PM10 but outside of PM2.5, with diameters between 2.5 µm and 10 µm. Note: PM10 refers to airborne particles less than 10 micrometres in diameter. Key points. The record for the highest daily PM10 concentration since 2009 was set 4 times between 15 November 2019 and 11 January 2020.

These particles include dust, pollen and mold spores. Conversely, when someone references PM 2.5 they are referring to particles smaller than 2.5 µm. These smaller particles include combustion particles, organic compounds and metals. The abbreviation PM stands for particulate matter, and the number to the right indicates the particle size.

Fine particles have adverse effects on human health and can be responsible for and/or contribute to a number of respiratory problems. Fine particles in this context refer to primary particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10) and emissions of secondary particulate matter precursors (NO X, SO 2 and NH 3).

Maintaining clean air. Today, all of Washington meets air quality  Breathing in particle pollution can be harmful to your health. Coarse (bigger) particles, called PM10, can irritate your eyes, nose, and throat. Dust from roads  PM10 particles are produced naturally by volcanoes, wind-blown fine sand and soil, sea salt and mould spores, or can result from human activity e.g.
