Motorized is fine until late game. The one extremely great benefit they have is to bump hardness of a division above 50% so you can use some specific panzer tactics, such as Blitz and the tank specific breaktrough, which can increase speed of panzer/mechanzed divisions by 50% in combat. Mechanized is better. Mech 1 or 2 is a bit slower however, but just as fast as med tank 1 or 2, so if combined then no problem.
