Part of its success results from a libretto based on a play be the great French dramatist Pierre Corneille, the only libretto of any Handel opera, in my opinion, that isn't marred by extraneous bombast or silliness. Glyndebourne, UK July 29, 2015. In 1739 when Handel first performed his oratorio Saul, the depiction of biblical life on an opera stage did not sit well with a strongly protestant culture. Rinaldo was Handel’s first opera in London, and also the first Italian opera specially devised for the English stage. The fact hat Rinaldo succeeded where other Italian operas had failed was down to two factors: the opera was devised specifically for English tastes; The opera was championed and marketed with great skill by Aaron Hill, director of London’s Haymarket Theatre. Handel's opera Rinaldo.

It’s played at the BBC Proms while almost 40 performances have graced Glyndebourne’s festival and tour up to now, so it must be doing something right. The opera was a roaring success at the time and the most-repeated of all Handel's operas during his lifetime and yet has been over-shadowed in recent decades by his other great masterpieces, with the result that Richard's Carsen's new production for Glyndebourne is the first in Britain for over 30 years.
